EMDR Therapy: Healing What Words Alone Cannot Reach

Sometimes the mind gets stuck. A memory resurfaces without warning. A smell, a sound, or a look from a stranger pulls you back to a moment you've tried to leave behind. Talking about what happened can only go so far — because trauma isn't stored in words. It's stored in the body, the nervous system, and the way you move through the world every day.

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is one of the most well-researched, clinically validated therapies available for healing trauma. At Positive Mind Counseling, EMDR is offered by Dan, an experienced therapist trained in this transformative, evidence-based approach.

What Is EMDR Therapy?

EMDR is a structured, phased therapy that helps the brain reprocess disturbing memories that have become "stuck" — memories that still carry the emotional and physical intensity of the original experience. Through a series of guided bilateral stimulation (typically eye movements, tapping, or auditory tones), EMDR helps your brain do what it naturally wants to do: process, integrate, and move forward.

Unlike traditional talk therapy, EMDR doesn't require you to describe every detail of what happened. Instead, it works with the brain's own healing mechanisms to reduce the emotional charge attached to painful memories — so they become part of your history rather than something that continues to define your present.

What EMDR Can Help With

EMDR therapy is highly effective for:

  • PTSD and complex trauma (C-PTSD)

  • Childhood trauma and adverse childhood experiences (ACEs)

  • Anxiety and panic disorders

  • Phobias and specific fears

  • Grief and loss

  • Depression rooted in traumatic experiences

  • Survivors of abuse, accidents, or medical trauma

  • First responders and secondary traumatic stress

Our Approach to EMDR

We believe that healing isn't about going back and reliving pain — it's about helping your nervous system finally feel safe enough to let it go.

Dan approaches EMDR with patience, attunement, and deep respect for each client's pace. Before any reprocessing begins, meaningful time is spent building the therapeutic relationship, establishing safety, and equipping you with stabilization tools. You will never be moved faster than you're ready to go.

EMDR at Positive Mind is:

  • Trauma-informed — your comfort and sense of safety come first

  • Paced thoughtfully — sessions are structured around your window of tolerance

  • Integrated — EMDR can be woven alongside other therapeutic approaches when appropriate

  • Collaborative — you are always an active participant in your own healing

Why EMDR Works

The brain has a natural capacity to heal — just as the body heals from a physical wound. Traumatic experiences can disrupt this process, leaving memories stored in a fragmented, dysregulated state. EMDR therapy activates the brain's Adaptive Information Processing (AIP) system, allowing it to finally complete what it started. Research consistently shows EMDR to be as effective as — and often more efficient than — other trauma treatments, with lasting results.

You don't have to stay stuck. Healing is possible, and it can begin here.

EMDR therapy is available in-person at our East Lansing location, and via telehealth for residents throughout Michigan.
